Submechanophobia Game: how deep can you lower the probe before you bring it back?

A tiny probe light in black water facing a colossal sunken diving helmet PLAY FREE ▸

SUBMERGED is a free browser horror game built around submechanophobia — the fear of huge man-made things under water. You lower a small yellow probe named PIP on a single cable into black water. Its headlight only reaches a few meters. Somewhere out there are machines that should not be that big.

What is submechanophobia?

Submechanophobia is the uneasy, sometimes intense fear of man-made objects that are partly or fully submerged: ship propellers seen from below, rusted hulls, dam intakes, drain pipes, underwater statues. It usually comes with thalassophobia (fear of deep, dark water) and megalophobia (fear of enormous objects). The feeling is less about danger and more about scale — something huge, built by people, abandoned where nobody can see it.

Your score is how deep PIP goes — but only if you bring PIP home. Depth and every hit wear down the cable. If it snaps, PIP is lost and the dive does not count. That is the whole game: one more meter, or reel up now?

On the way down you pass an anchor chain with links taller than a person, a sunken hull, a propeller that is somehow still turning, a dam intake that pulls everything in, a fallen radio mast, a bottomless concrete spillway, a shaft fan, a flooded tile hall under flickering lights, a colossal diving helmet, a sunken submarine, a sluice gate that opens and closes every few seconds — and something waiting at 900 m.

Tips for going deeper

Endings and ranking

There are 12 endings — from PADDLER (reel up before 100 m) to THE BOTTOM (touch 900 m), plus ways to lose the probe: cable snapped, shredded by the fan, swallowed by the intake, crushed by the gate. The world ranking lists the deepest recovered dives all-time, this week and today. After each dive you can share a link with your photo; friends who open it get your depth as a challenge.

FAQ

Is it free? Do I need to download anything?
Free, no download, no account. It runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on Android, iPhone and PC.

Are there monsters or jump scares?
No. No creatures, no gore, no jump scares. Only darkness, scale and sound.

I get motion sick. Is it OK?
The camera moves slowly and only downward. If you feel uncomfortable, take a break.

Is there a thalassophobia game like this?
SUBMERGED is about deep dark water too, but its focus is the man-made giants inside it — submechanophobia.
